Mary Cassatt (메리 캐샤트) 1845~1926
 
 
메리 캐사트 미국 피츠버그부호의 딸로 출생했다.
펜실베이니아의 미술 아카데미에서 공부 한 후 
생애의 절반을 유럽의 상류사회에서 보냈다.
 
메리 캐사트는 유년 시절부터 이미 
프랑스적인 풍토를 익히고 있었으며, 
1872 년이래 파리에서 본격적인 화업에 들어섰다. 
 
그가 인상파 그룹에 참가하고 그 영향을 받게 된 것은
E.드가와의 만남이 계기가 되었으며, 
인상파에 이끌려 전후 4회나 인상파전에 출품하였다.
 
화풍 또한 그가 존경했던 드가에 가까운 작풍으로 
명쾌한 색조와 경쾌한 터치가 특징이었으며,
주제는 주로 어머니와 아들을 중심으로 하는 중류가정의 정경을 그렸다.
 
그러나 그녀는 화려한 사교생활과는 달리 일생을 독신으로 지냈다.
그녀는 무명시대의 인상파화가들의 작품을 많이 
사준 후원자였으며 특히 만년에는 인상파화가들의
 작품을 미국에 소개하고 옹호하는 일에 전념했다. 
 
안타깝게도 그녀는 화가로서 인정받지 못한 채
노후의 병안으로 실명상태로 세상을 떠났다. 
그녀가 높이 평가받게 된 것은 죽은 이후의 일이다.
